A tribute to one of Le Mans most unforgettable moments!

When it comes to memorable years at Le Mans, there are few that are more so than the 1999 edition of the 24 hour race. There was no shortage of quality in the field that year with entrants from a variety of manufacturers including Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Panoz and Toyota but it would be Mercedes-Benz who would steal the limelight and not for the reason they’d hoped for.

During the race, the number 5 car being driven by Peter Dumbreck somersaulted off the track when the car's aerodynamics caused the Merc to literally take off at over 190mph.

This crash would have been shocking enough on its own however Mercedes’ number 4 car driven by Mark Webber had already crashed in almost identical circumstances not once but twice during the Thursday night practice and the Saturday morning warm-up respectively.

The latest t-shirt from our Powersport Legends range captures the drama of the shocking Dumbreck crash quoting the famous line from the commentator“Oh my God…the Mercedes has taken off!”.
